3月30日 The "this time next week" gameHere is the start of what is sure to be a week of the most annoying blog posts ever...
This time next week...
Shawn and I will be at Epcot in Future World, taking in one or two more attractions before our lovely dinner at Restaurant Marrakesh, home of the beautiful belly dancer! :)
PS The Zune wasn't bad at all. Monkeys really COULD do it. I've got the very small 8GB version, it slips right into my pocket and I can walk around all day long, doing laundry, dishes, etc. and listen to my favorite tunes! Supposedly I talk really loud when I have the ear buds in, and my singing, which is "not good" at best, is down right TERRIBLE when listeners don't at least have the music to mask my off-key, off-pitch warblings.
I've got it playing on shuffle, right now "Nuair a Chi Thu Caileag Bhoidhech" (gaelic) by Capercaillie is playing. Right before it was "He Mele No Lilo" (Hawaiian) from the Lilo and Stich soundtrack was on. I'm rooting for something in Spanish by Shakira or something from Wesley's favorite lullaby CD, "On a Starry Night" because those are all in other languages as well. I feel so worldly!
... scrap that. Goodies by Ciara is playing now. HA! :P 3月28日 Single Digit DanceThe Single Digit Dance is what die-hard Disney vacation planners do when the number of days until their next trip drops to 9. Get it? Single digit number in the daily countdown.
I've run out of paper and can't print any more of my spreadsheets, lists, trivia, or tip sheets until I can get more, so tonight I am going to occupy myself with finally loading music onto the Zune that Shawn gave me at Christmas. It's never been out of it's packaging. I am irrationally afraid of anything new, technology-wise, and if it weren't for Shawn, I would never have learned to use computers, cell phones, audio/visual equipment, or even the digital camera (I campaigned HARD against buying a digital camera!). Thanks, Shawn?!?!?! :P
OK, off to learn this new doo-hickie... (I'm SOOO intimidated!)
Just for fun... here is a picture of Shawn and I from my first trip to Magic Kingdom, in December of 2003.
3月25日 Lucky DuckySeveral times these past few days I have found myself pondering "silver linings" and repeating the phrase "Thank God for small favors"
Lots of little stuff has been going "wrong", but the outcome of each seems to turn out ok...
Camera breaking: at least it didn't happen while we were on vacation and not able to do anything about it. Small favor: we are going to Cincy first to drop kids off w/ my parents, and will most likely be able to borrow my sister's MUCH MUCH nicer, professional-quality camera.
Not being on the ball for Easter: less candy purchased (and consumed!), kids had no idea of the pending festivities because I had no preparations ahead of time! Also didn't waste time and eggs on hardboiling / dyeing, we don't ever eat them anyways. Waste not, want not!
Not having our act together enough to do be able one of the tours at Disney: We were able to switch which day we went to 2 of the parks, resulting in being able to spend a full day in Shawn's favorite park (old MGM, now called Hollywood Studios), AND being able to go to Epcot Future World on a day that is not rated busy, at the suggested "perfect" time according to Tour Guide Mike's Automated Vacation Planner (best $20 bucks we've EVER spent, and that's not just me being ocd, Shawn says it all the time too!).
Our Disney concierge being out of the office until this Thursday, AND the regular team not answering my emails for two days (actually. we are officially on day 3 - UNACCEPTABLE!!!)... I called the Dining Reservations line myself and was able to get every restaurant I wanted, at the exact time I wanted, with only 11 days before the trip. Folks, this is UNHEARD OF. Even the lady making the reservations couldn't believe it. The first request was a fluke, the second a happy coincidence... but all five restuarant changes... UNBELIEVABLE!!! And we are eating at some of the nicest, most popular table service restaurants in all of Walt Disney World. The lady helping me was making jokes about my magic touch... maybe I should select lottery numbers! LOL
And speaking of Disney... I've been packing for the trip for a couple of weeks now (of course I have!). I tried on outfits, figured out what else we needed, bought vacation clothes, special walking socks, Mickey Mouse luggage (yeah, you read that right, I couldn't help myself, it was on clearance!) and travel size toiletries...
Wesley was upset this morning because he wanted to leave and go to Target (boy, do I have him trained!) and I said we had to go upstairs before we left to change his diaper and so that I could change into a different pair of pants. In the time it took me to take off the pants I was wearing and make a very quick trip to the potty, Wesley got into my semi-packed suitcase, pulled out the travel-size shampoo, and POURED IT ALL OUT ONTO MY CARPET. I was LIVID. Especially after I tried to clean it up and it started foaming up, suds EVERYWHERE. I called Shawn in a panic, our darn internet was down and I needed him to search on the internet for the best way to get shampoo out of carpet. Once he read a recommendation to turn the brush off on the carpet steamer, I was in business! It took almost an hour, but the shampoo is almost entirely out of the carpet now. Small Favors: It was only travel sized! God help me (and Wes) if he pours out a full sized bottle. Also, since I had the carpet steamer out anyways, I attacked this dark purple stain that mysteriously showed up on our bedroom carpet one day (I suspect juice), and it came out entirely! The whole room smells like Dove Cucumber shampoo (not unpleasant), and the area where he poured the shampoo is not stained. You can tell where he did it though, because that spot is extra fluffy and soft now. (good grief!)
Then after the shampoo snafu, and getting Colleen from preschool, I was supposed to take Shawn lunch. I totally forgot and went to Rite Aid because they had a sale on sunglasses, 2 for 1, and Eucerin lotion (25% off). I remembered his lunch as we were walking out the door, only to discover that I didn't have my cell with me. So... we went back home, I chatted w/ Shawn and found out that he had been on a call helping a customer anyways. I was able to take him lunch and he broke away from the call long enough to come out and pick up his lunch and kiss the kids. All's well that ends well, although I still feel really bad for forgetting him! Silver lining: I got the coolest sunglasses! They are lightweight yet sturdy-feeling, inexpensive, and when I put them on, I actually forgot I was wearing them - they were that comfortable.
I am one Lucky Ducky! Thank God for small favors!
Love, Jen 3月24日 Happy EasterEaster caught me off guard this year. Usually I am decorating far in advance for a holiday, planning and purchasing everything for it with lots of time to spare. Not this time, the Easter bunny snuck right up behind me and goosed me in the rear. I managed to pull it off though, and I don't think the kids noticed my lack of preparedness.
I purchased a few bags of candy (very little, actually, I'm proud of myself!), Coco and Wes each got two books and a My Little Pony DVD. He won't believe me when he is older, but Wes is actually the bigger My Little Pony fan. He is always asking to watch it! :) They each got the required chocolate bunny, and we had a fun easter egg hunt in the morning.
I'd LOVE to post pictures, but... our camera is not cooperating. It is a five year old digital camera, and we've had to send it in for repair once already. It is a 5.0 megapixel and, while it was a terrific camera in it's day, it is not worth the repair fee for us to send it in again. :(
So we are either going to have to bite the bullet and buy a new camera before our vacation (hate to buy cheap because cheap usually shows in picture quality), but I really do not want to buy a nice camera again right now, because our vacation fun money will take a direct hit from it! :(
My sis has a very nice camera, I am going to ask her if we can borrow it while we are at Disney, and then we can take our time choosing (and saving up for!) a new camera for ourselves. Arg! What crappy timing for it to break! Shawn reminds me that it could be worse... we could have discovered it was broke on our first day at Disney. Thank God for small favors. *sigh*
Hugs, Jen 3月22日 Timely articleThis topic has been on my mind lately, I've been trying to see it from all sides and then decide for myself how I feel about it.
In case you don't feel like clicking the link, it is a Slate article about unwed parenthood.
I know I have married blogging buddies, single mom blogging buddies, and unmarried/single/non-parent buddies.
I don't want this to turn into a heated, angry debate, but I am interested in others' opinions... do you see marriage as a prerequisite to parenthood? Do you think that culture change is responsible for the drastic rise in babies born to unwed parents, or do you think its the other way around, that it's the unwed parents responsible for the culture change?
When I was in high school, I knew of two girls that became pregnant. One hid it from all of us, was gone from school for two weeks, and when she came back she quietly confessed to a few trusted friends that she had had a baby, I can't remember if a family member raised it or if it was given up for adoption. The other was open about her pregnancy (and there was no way she could conceal hers!) and kept her baby. She was a junior at the time and I can't say that I recall her having a date to a dance or a football game from then on out. In my day (which wasn't all that long ago, I graduated in 1996), getting pregnant was still a disgrace, still something that marked you forever in an unflattering light.
These days, it is not uncommon for dozens of girls to be pregnant at high school. High school girls I know talk casually of baby showers for their friends in the exact same manner that they discuss which mall to go shopping at.
Suffice to say it is something that has been on my mind lately.
3月18日 Food fightSo the other day the kids and I went to pick Shawn up from work and he wasn't quite ready to leave when we arrived. So we were waiting out in the car for him. The kids were both restless and cranky.
When Wes gets mad, he throws things. We are working on the impulse, but progress is hampered by me (I usually end up laughing at him and the things he chooses to throw, I know I shouldn't!). The only thing that was in his reach was 1/2 a bag of french fries left over from our McDonald's drive-thru lunch. So he lobbed a fry at me.
Imagine his surprise when I picked it off my shoulder and threw it right back at him.
Imagine Shawn's surprise when he walks out to the car, stressed from a long busy day, and sees his wife and children laughing manically, fries flying everywhere...
Imagine MY surprise when Wes ran out of fries and hit me in the temple with the apple I gave him as a snack to tide him over until dinner.
It's all fun and games till someone gets smacked upside the head with half-eaten fruit! Serves me right for teaching them about food fights... LOL 3月15日 Coco UpdateShort Version: Coco is fine
Long version: Took Colleen back to the doctor today, the test-results nurse from earlier in this week actually called me first thing this morning to check on her and made the appointment for us to come in, which was nice.
As usual, our doctor's main nurse took us back to the room, weighed Coco, did the temperature and how-are-you-doing routine, heard Coco cough and immediately went to get the pulse-ox device. Colleen's pulse-oxygen was 92 beats per minute and 97% oxygen. Well within the norms, but the cough did not sound good.
Doc comes in and listens to Coco's chest, says there is definite wheezing and prescribes a breathing treatment right there in the office. As they are getting set up for that, we talk about her diagnosis and her chest x-ray.
The radiologist interpreted the x-ray as (1) bronchitis, (2) asthma, and/or (3) peribronchial disease. That is the one I couldn't remember the other day. I searched on WebMD, Live search, and Google, but couldn't find any good info as to what exactly peribroncial disease is. Best I can figure it is something like pneumonia.
Doc's Official Diagnosis: "Walking" Pneumonia (meaning a mild case), and asthma. He feels the heart palpatations are a symptom of the asthma.
The breathing treatment helped some and he prescribed two different inhaled medications, one for the asthma and one for the pneumonia. Once the coughing goes away we can stop the second one, but he wants us to keep up the asthma one till we follow up in three weeks. At that point we will talk about a long term plan for her.
Coco was a trooper during the appointment, she cooperated nicely and handled the nebulizer treatment well. When she is afraid she wants to hold my hand for reassurance, which I find entirely endearing. She'll clench my hand for all she's worth with her face frozen in her best "brave" expression, only her big worry-filled eyes and white knuckles giving her away.
Wesley and I had a nice long talk about his behavior at the doctor's office after the last trip. It shook me so much I spent several hours the night it happened reading up on "connection parenting" and giving myself a refresher course on toddler thought processes and positive discipline. He was not the poster child for submissive, golden child behavior, but he was 100% improved over the last visit. Of course, I made sure he had a clean diaper, full belly, and nice restful nap before this visit, along with 10 of his favorite cars and his Bunny (security blanket). Might as well stack the odds in my favor, right? He didn't hit or back talk and only cried for a few minutes when we passed the suckers without getting one. Success!!! There are two things I have to keep in mind when Wes is acting out - (1) Have I met all of his basic needs? (and if not, shame on me!) and (2) Bad behavior does NOT = Bad Parent OR Bad Child. We're all entitled to our moments.
And Doc? Besides being a pediatrician (a very well respected one with a thriving practice = seeing tons of kids all day long), he is a father of 3 children, two of which are close in age to my own. So he's been there. No kid has 100% great behavior all the time. How do I think he was able to get Wes to mind so easily? Besides being a male authority figure (Wes responds well to the type), he is a father who has had lots of practice in perfecting that "firm yet kind" voice.
We are invited to a birthday party for a little girl that was our neighbor back at old house tomorrow. I haven't said for sure that we aren't going, I'm going to wait and see how Coco feels tomorrow before making my final call. I'd love for the kids to see their old friends again, but if Coco's not feeling well, it's not a good idea.
I'm off to work on my scrapbook for a little while... I had "scrappers block" on 3 of the last pages and had a breakthrough this afteroon as I was driving with ideas for two of the pages. I can't wait to get it finished, it is a cute little book (of the pictures from that portrait session where I dressed them up as cupids).
Talk to you later!
Hugs, Jen 3月12日 The more I find out, the less I knowNurse called late yesterday afternoon.
I'll do my best to state the conversation word for word:
Nurse: Doc wanted me to give you a call about your daughter's test results, her x-ray results.
Me: Yes...
Nurse: He wanted me to tell you that her heart is perfect. No evidence of enlargement or fluid around it. Her heart is fine.
Me: What a relief!
Nurse: Her lungs show bronchitis, or asthma or [insert long multi-word name that ended in disease, I can't for the life of me remember what she said]. And it looks like he'd like you to follow up on Friday, do you already have your appointment?
Me: I thought he wanted me to call in with her heart rate numbers at the end of the week, does he want to see her?
Nurse: Um.... ..... Well just call in with her heart rate numbers then. Ok?
Me: Ok, now back to this lung stuff, what do we do about that?
Nurse: There aren't any instructions for treatment, just follow up on Friday.
She was rushing off the phone and Wes was screaming that he wanted to talk to his Mammaw. I feel like I know less than I did before she called! We are taking Colleen to see Doc either tomorrow or Friday. She has a cough that doesn't sound good and she says her belly hurts when she coughs. I don't see the point of taking a bunch of heart rates and calling in if we have established that it isn't her heart.
And the EKG showed that the arrhythmia in her heart beat happens when she takes a deep breath...
My sister's two boys both have asthma, one of them is quite severe. My mom has asthma too.
So we'll see. *sigh*
What on earth is going on with my little girl?!?!?
And GRRRR to that nurse who didn't have the basic answers I needed when she called. 3月10日 Loooooong DayUgh. Stupid time change did a number on me. Last night my body was all "It's midnight, time to go to bed", when it was really 1am, and then I thought I was having allergies, so I took benedryl, which hyped me up and I didn't get to sleep till 2 or so. Still had to get up at regular time, so I'm dragging.
Kept Colleen home from preschool today to take her to the doctor. She was sent home from preschool the other day because she was complaining of chest pain and her heart was pounding. It could be anxiety or her over doing physical activity, but it's not something we want to mess around with. She has a benign heart murmur, which lept to my mind when her teacher called me (although, she had an ultrasound test when she was an infant, her heart is fully formed, no holes or valve issues).
So I take her to the doctor expecting an in and out type thing, Doc listens to her heart, pronounces her fine, we go home reassurred... and possibly with a handout instructing us how to deal with anxiety in a 4 year old.
Except, maybe it's not anxiety after all. Doc wants to play it safe too. So she gets her blood oxygen level and heart rate monitored (little thing on her finger). Then she gets an EKG, FREAKS OUT because she doesn't like all the wires. EKG shows a mild arrhythmia, most likely caused by her taking a deep breath. Doc says this is not out of the ordinary for a child her age. Sends us to the hospital to have a chest x-ray done and wants me to take her pulse every so often over the next couple of days and report the results back to him at the end of the week.
While we are in the doctor's office, Wes makes a stinky diaper. Naturally, I have tons of wipes and NO MORE PULLUPS in the diaper bag (ARRGGG) and besides being uncomfortable with the dirty diaper, he is jealous because of how much attention Colleen is getting, so he acts out against me. I'm trying to focus on the doctor, not wanting to interrupt, so after the first time he hit me and I said "we don't hit", I ignored him. I guess it was bothering Doc though, because he told Wes in no uncertain terms that he was NOT allowed to hit me in his office, Wes reared his hand back to hit me again, Doc repeated himself in a firm yet kind voice (I have yet to master that technique) and Wes immediately stopped and stood in the corner. I was embarrassed because I felt like I couldn't control my own kid and inadequate because he could control him so easily.
Before we went to the hospital for the x-ray, I stopped and picked up some diapers, changed Wes, and then got lunch. He was a perfect angel during this interlude and I foolishly hoped that the unruly behavior (Spice shout out: I typed it "behaviour" at first! LOL), was behind us. You'd think I'd start to learn from experience, and yet, hope springs eternal.
So, we are at the hospital, all back in the x-ray room after Colleen's x-ray had been taken, the technician had gone around the back to look at it and make sure it was a good impression. She wanted Colleen to stay in the gown and keep the lead apron on, in case she had to take another x-ray. Coco was fidgety and cold, so I was trying to comfort her. I set Wes down for a minute to hug her... and Wes pushed the emergency system shut down button. Let's say that again: The. Emergency. System. Shut. Down. Button. The entire x-ray system shut down, the machinery above the table, the table itself, the machinery pointed at the wall for standing x-rays, the computers that tell the x-ray machines what to do, EVERY BLEEPING THING MECHANICAL IN THE WHOLE ROOM. It made this omnious "shutting down" noise and I sighed, picked Wes up, and went to go find the tech. Turns out I didn't have to, as I poked my head around the back to find her, she came running, almost yelling "what happened???". I explained and it was plain to see that she was NOT a happy camper. She couldn't get it back on, she didn't know how to override the emergency shut down, or how to reset it. Several times I heard her mutter under her breath about how she couldn't believe the whole system was down. Anyways, she ended up going get another guy, who did eventually figure it out. Cue the feelings of embarassement and inadequacy. And OOOOOHHHHH was I mad at Wes.
He had this attitude like "I don't know why you all are getting so worked up, it was just a button for heaven's sake..." I couldn't even get him to apologize for what he did. And trust me, this little guy is smart as a whip. He KNOWS he did something he shouldn't have. I just don't think he cares. I couldn't get out of that hospital fast enough.
*sigh*
Hugs, Jen
PS, I'll keep you all posted on Colleen. I'm pretty sure she is fine, but I'll relax when I hear that the x-ray came back normal. 3月7日 Pixie DustOK Everyone, I've got the Pixie Dust thing in the bag! (Pardon the pun!)
I decided that I would make Mickey Mouse head shaped confetti and put it in a little organza drawstring bag. Small, lightweight, easy to hand out.
When I went to Michaels craft store for supplies (The Mickey head paper punch, glittery paper, and bags) I came across this beautiful irredescent embossed heart shaped confetti. It goes perfectly with the light pink shimmery paper I choose for the Mickey heads.
I made up the bags two nights ago, I did 24 in all (the bags came 12 to a pack). It took a long time because of my need for each bag to have exactly the same number of each thing inside. This is the most frustrating part of OCD. I KNOW I'm being silly, I just can't STOP myself. So I counted out 10 Mickey heads, 10 large heart confettis, and 16 small heart confettis.
After the bags were tied closed it looked kind of like Pixie Dust, but I didn't feel that they were "finished" yet... needed something else to really look magical.
I had some left over strands of mini "pearls" from Coco's Halloween costume 2 years ago, and I had some pink and purple ribbon. So I added a ribbon bow with a short strand of "pearls" tied into it.
They are just adorable! I can't wait to see the looks on these little kids' faces! And... since the bags are tied up twice, only the most enterprising child will get it open to spill out the confetti. The confetti is all big enough to be picked up by hand, though. And it is only 36 pieces. So if it does get spilled, it isn't a HUGE mess for someone. I was originally considering glitter, once I thought about the mess factor, I knew it wouldn't work! :D
I'm going to try to take a picture of the "pixie dust" and if it turns out I'll post it on here.
Can you tell I'm excited? Our vacation clothes came yesterday and aside from one shirt being a little big and the jeans being too long, everything fit nicely. I had to try everything on and show Shawn, who just wanted to close his eyes for a few minutes after work. Poor guy!
YAY! Less than a month till Disney! :D
3月4日 Signs I've taken the DIsney thing a bit too farSign #1: I haven't done dishes since yesterday afteroon, because the computer is in HERE and the dishes are out THERE and, hard as I try, I just can't be two places at once!
Sign #2: My favorite tea mug was used last night, and instead of washing it out or just using a different mug, I actually thought, "Cool beans, the sugar will still be at the bottom just like the Dwarf's mugs in Snow White!"
Disney PlanningIn case you haven't heard (LOL), Shawn and I are going to Disney World by ourselves for a week in early April to celebrate our 9 year wedding anniversary. I just LOVE having a project, something to learn about and plan for. And Disney? It's a dream come true for someone like me! I've been busy for months, scouring message boards, unofficial fan sites, the official sites (which leave a lot to be desired, unfortunately), etc etc. I am also fortunate enough to be able to go each year when we visit Shawn's grandparents for Thanksgiving, so there is no need to try and do "EVERYTHING" this trip... just the stuff we can't do with the kids tagging along!
We are approximately one month from the start of our trip and I just have to talk about it all, so here goes!
General Vacation Planning: We picked our resort (it was a no brainer, the Polynesian!), we picked what level/view room we wanted, and we decided on what kind of tickets we wanted. This phase of planning is the "numbers crunching" part. We decided to upgrade to the Platinum Plan because of all it includes. Our vacation is practically all-inclusive. It was NOT cheap, and I do not recommend it for families with young children (you just won't get your money's worth). But for us, in this circumstance, it made sense and it will be fun to indulge ourselves.
Itinerary planning: I started by deciding which tours we wanted to do, and then where we wanted to eat and for what meal. I planned our trip around the tours because they are included in our plan and something we are not likely to do when we have the kids with us. The restaurants: because we want to experience the signiture dining table service restuarants (again, something we are not going to do with the kids, partly because of the expense). Reservations are a must for just about every place we selected, and for resort guests, they can be made 190 days out. (It is 180 for those not staying at a Disney resort). Yes, we did get our reservations in the very day we were able to (LOL). We were able to get the days and times we wanted for everything.
COMMON SENSE TIP: Don't plan on eating around the regular times, it is far too busy, and even with a reservation you will have to wait (for drinks, food, etc) because of how busy it is all around (for server, kitchen, etc). If you are a morning person, shift your dining times up an hour or so, if you are an evening person, shift back two hours (yes, that is how long it takes to process through everyone who decided to eat at the regular time!).
Park visit planning: We already knew what days we would be at which park, because of our tours and dining planning. I made a spreadsheet (of course I did!) with a time line. I know how long the tours are, and I have researched how long we can expect to be in the restaurants based on the reviews of past visitors, and from that I have a general idea of how much free time we will have per park. This is the part where people think I am over-planning and I assure you I'm NOT! I know how much free time we have, and I know what attractions we really really want to experience (think: roller coasters, thrill rides, shows the kids won't be interested in for a while). From there, it was easy to research the duration of the attraction (the shows can be long!), which has fast pass, and the best times to visit each one. I also have maps of each park, so, armed with my knowledge of our time constraints and the attractions we want to fit in them, I was able to make a "best route" plan for us to minimize backtracking (trust me, our feet WILL thank us).
Here's the kicker: We still have to be FLEXIBLE. An attraction could be closed. We might get there and decide on the spur of the moment to do an unplanned ride (especially if lines are short). I'll still have the information, and can use it to make informed decisions.
I strongly believe we will get far more out of this trip now that I have done the research and made the spreadsheets and plans. Even if they aren't followed to the letter (and I am pretty sure there WILL be deviations), we will still know what our top priorities are, where they are located, etc etc.
Very little of this information is on the official Disney website. You have to head over to one of the unofficial sites, it is amazing at how much these folks put into it.
Another overlooked bit of essential planning is transportation planning. As a resort guest, our transportation amongst all destinations Disney is complimentry. Too many people don't understand the systems, scheduling, or even where to line up for said transport, which is by monorail, ferry, friendship boat, or bus, depending on where you are and where you want to go. I know HOW we are getting from point A to point B and approximately how long it will take. I've read several reviews where a family didn't plan their transport and ended up missing a tour because of it.
Also, after you've picked your favorite attractions, order your complimentry set of personalized park maps. They are beautiful and will make a nice addition to the scrapbook.
Packing planning: YES, I am planning for packing! I don't want to forget any basics because Disney markup is just too much for my patently cheap soul to handle. Batteries? Sunscreen? Sunglasses? You had better believe I am bringing them from home! (yes I realize how silly this sounds, all things considered, but still. A cheapskate doesn't change her spots overnight!). Besides, including our time in Cincinnati we will be out of town for two weeks! THAT'S a lot of a clothes, if you don't plan well. After planning out how many outfits we needed and what type (Casual, Dressy Casual, Dressy) I set aside potential outfits, which helped me see what artlicles of clothing needed to be purchased. I have bought things that coordinate for mix and matching. I read a tip from someone that moisture-wicking socks were a must for blister prevention. Shawn and I now have 5 pairs each of CoolMax walking socks on the way! I also planned to be a shirt or two short, we're going to be buying them as souveniers anyway, might as well budget the suitcase space for them from the get go!
One of the most important things in regards to packing is the carry on bag. Can't bring too much stuff, or it won't fit in the compartment. Have to bring enough stuff to survive comfortably if checked luggage goes missing. Plus, we are using the Disney's Magic Express service, we likely won't see our bags for 5-7 hours after we arrive in Orlando! I've heard that lots of folks fail to realize or plan for this and their first day's activities are hamstrung because of it.
So our carry on bags will contain: basic toiletries, medicines, camera and batteries, WOW cards and Su Doku books, sun glasses, sun screen, (have to pack the liquid spray on bug repellant bc of security restrictions), cell phones and chargers, Zunes, Vacation Information binder (where eles would all my planning notes and spreadsheets be kept? Also using it to store our travel documents, Miss You cards we're sending to the kids on the 1st day, and stamps for postcards), one tshirt, set of underclothes and socks for each of us (If it comes to it, we'll wear our travel jeans again), and our wallets, keys, etc. We are also carrying on jackets. You never know!
The other thing is that I am not just packing for Shawn and I, nor am I just packing for one climate. We will be going from still-wintery Ohio to summery Orlando. The kids are staying in Ohio the entire time. It is kind of hard for me to get my head around this, it is good that I am starting now, else the kids might end up at my parents' with tshirts, shorts, and swimming suits! LOL
RAOK: Something that I am going to work on next is keeping an eye out for opportunities to "spread pixie dust". This is the term I've heard others use when they talk about Random Acts Of Kindness while at Disney World. How great would it be to see an upset or bored child and be able to give them a small trinket to help make their day a little brighter? I don't want to limit myself to kids, but I can't come up with anything for adults off the top of my head. This one is going to take some thought. I do want to bring a little something along for this purpose, and I'm sure there will be opportunities once we are there. It's just the next thing on my list...
Speaking of lists: I keep a running To Do list and To Buy list and add to it as things occur to me. It's been a life saver! My memory doesn't seem to be worth squat these days.
OK, I feel better now that all of that is "out there". I tried to call my mom and just rattle everything off to her, but she wasn't home! (The nerve... LOL)
I am SO having the time of my life. The actual vacation will be fun beyond my imagination, but I have to admit, I've had a blast planning for it as well!
As Mickey would say, "See ya real soon!"

Black? Puh-lease!Your color is black. The color of night. Serene and mysterious, black conjures up images of elegant evening gowns, dashing tuxedos, and gleaming limousines. Traditionally a symbol of success, black also represents power and an uncompromising demand for perfection. Not surprisingly, you tend to set challenging goals for yourself and do whatever it takes to achieve them — your strength of character is second to none. This unfaltering determination, along with your natural elegance, impresses people. But keep in mind that your personality might be intimidating to some. Try to temper your demanding side with a little softness — trust us, it won't kill you. Overall, though, black is the color of professionalism and achievement, which means it's clearly the color for you.
PS LIARS! I am So NOT a perfectionist. So THERE! Harumph... LOL 3月3日 Lands End Swimming Suits...Are they worth it?
$74 seems like A LOT to spend on a swimming suit, but if it will make me feel more comfortable while I am wearing it, then it might be worth it. We need to wear a swimming suit for the Dolphins In Depth tour at Epcot (Our upcoming adults-only 2nd honeymoon vacation for folks that don't read all the time). I also want to go swimming at least one afternoon in the resort swimming pools... they are a sight to behold.
So... anyone have one? Or at least have advice for me?
I have a suit now, but the shoulder straps always fall down and I am NOT comfortable wearing it. I'll tough it out if I have to, or get a new suit from Target or Wal-Mart, but if the Lands End suits are really all that, then it may be worth it.
Here is a link to the one I am considering:
