6月30日 Happy Birthday to Me!I'm 31 today. Feels like any other day. The one thing that has resonated with me is my internet handle... AuntieJen21. I've had that handle for 10 yeas now. Funny, doesn't feel like 10 years. I came up with the handle when my sister was expecting her first child. I was going to be an Auntie at 21. Get it? Originally I had written that he would be 10 this July, but that is not true. She was pregnant when I was 21, but he was born almost a month after I turned 22. He'll be 9 this year.
I saw something the other day that I HAD to have and it was more than I normally spend for myself so I justified it by claiming it as my birthday present. It is a Japanese wood block print of an owl and it now hangs proudly in my dining room. Happy birthday to me!
6月27日 Painting the houseOur house here in WA was in dire need of a new paint job when we bought it, 11 months ago. Well, it was in dire need of lots of stuff and we are finally getting to the exterior painting. I got quotes from 3 different painters and they ranged from $3800 to $6000. We have a tri-level, so there is a section where it is 2 stories tall, but for $3800 to $6000, we decided that we were capable of painting the house ourselves (God help us).
The hardest part has been deciding on the color scheme. We knew right away that we wanted earth tones, something that would make the house part of the surroundings. What we didn't know was how many different shades of brown and green were available from Behr and Sherwin Williams! LOL
Luckily for us, Home Depot sells little trial sized pots of paint for $3.99. so we narrowed it down to 3 color suites of 3 colors each (body, trim, and highlight) and I went out and bought the 9 little pots of paint. I put them all up on the garage portion of the front of our house, which is the only good place to see how all 3 colors of each color suite worked together. Then I had to go and start combining different elements of the 3 different suites together. And then I had to go out and buy two more sample colors to try and decide between trim colors with the body / highlight combo I came up with. Then I had to gum up the works further by wanting to introduce a fourth color to the suite, to make the wall above the garage "pop", which led Shawn to believe that I didn't really like the colors we had picked so far and he basically said "do what you want with the colors, if you aren't happy we'll just be repainting it again anyways!" Overwhelmed at the thought of trying to narrow down colors again, I did my best to convince him that I do like the colors, I'm just trying to make our house look as good as possible.
After much gnashing of teeth and staring at our house, muttering to myself, I decided on the 5 colors I wanted to paint the exterior of our house. I was ok with my decision, but good sense prevailed and I did not send the email to the HOA requesting color approval. I wanted to "sleep on it" to make sure I didn't change my mind again.
Lo and Behold! When I was out doing yardwork today I spent most of the time thinking about the colors. You see, we don't have a Victorian home that warrants that many colors on the exterior. We have a 1968 contemporary tri-level and 5 colors is too much. So... I finally decided on the colors. I thought about it all day and I just emailed the Architectural Control Committee a few minutes ago requesting approval. If they reject the colors I fear my head will explode. I am confident that they will approve the colors though. They are tasteful and in keeping with the "neighborhood aesthetic".
The body of the house is Belgian Sweet, a yummy chocolate color. Seriously, the color reminds me of the palace that Willy Wonka built for the sheik out of chocolate. I am going to want to eat my house!
Most of the trim and the back deck will be Bison Brown, which is the closest match I could find for the dark brown that the trim and deck are currently painted.
The garage doors and front door will be painted Mountain Elk, which looks like a washed out greenish brown on line, but in reality it is a very nice earthy green, not too dark, but quite complimentary to the Belgian Sweet.
The garage door detail trim and the trim around the front door are going to be Thorny Branch, a very deep dark green. It also compliments the other colors, it is similiar enough to elminate the "victorian paint job" look, but it is different enough that it makes the highlight areas pop.
The HOA can take up to 30 days before giving me approval. I hope it doesn't take that long, now that I know what colors we are going to use, I want to get started!
I was going to post pictures that I took of the paint colors on the garage doors, but I realized that they both clearly show my address. I love my blogging buddies dearly, but I am just not comfortable putting my address out there. :)

6月26日 Coping mechanismIt is noon on the last day of the first week of summer vacation and I am at my wits end. I am in here hiding from the kids, trying not to hear them fight in the other room. This feels like I am writing a desparate SOS letter for someone to come rescue me. Thank goodness swimming lessons start soon, hopefully it will tire them out enough for a nap, I suspect my sanity depends on whether or not I get a short quiet interlude each day. Weird 25thThe 25th was my mom's 50th birthday, happy birthday, Mom.
I logged on to the internet this morning and learned that Farrah Fawcett had passed away, less than an hour after her death. Seemed invasive, that we'd know that "instantly". I was sad that she didn't get to marry Ryan, but glad that she was no loger suffering.
I spent a decent block of time today negotiating insurance on the NC house. The policy we've had for this past year was not being renewed because the house is occupied by a renter instead of the owners. We need a Fire & Dwelling policy (those are hard to come by and expensive), supposedly it is all straightened out, but I don't know that I will fully believe it until I get the paperwork signed and sent back to them. Still, to even have the quote and the verbal go ahead and they said they'd bill our mortgage company ASAP, so I feel like the big black cloud over me has turned to a less threatening light grey cloud. For the most part owning a home that is rented out is not that bad, but there are times like this that get me thinking about the responsibilities of being a land lord and how it isn't as easy as it seems.
I got my birthday present from my mom. Wesley wished that the UPS man would bring something "tool" (cool), like a little car or something. He complained that all the UPS man ever brings is candles and stuff. I just got a Yankee Candle order yesterday. Poor kid. Oh, that reminds me, my mom got a present today, an Inflated ball was mailed to her by my Aunt Dottie. Her address was written on it, along with "Hope you have a ball on your birthday". That's a pretty neat idea.
I was on my way to Home Depot to buy the right water supply line for a toilet that I am repairing and to pick up samples for two possibilies for the exterior trim (we are gearing up to paint the outside of our house) when the radio station broke in with a report that Michael Jackson had died. I just teared up writing that. I was totally unprepared for how his passing would affect me. I think I wrote somewhere that I felt bewildered and lost, which I do. I've reacted very much like I imagine I would if I learned that a dear friend had died.
So - Happy Birthday Mom, we'll always remember your 50th as the day the stars died.
Love, Jen
6月24日 AffairsI can't for the life of me figure out why these politicans and public figures can't keep it in their pants. Do they honestly think they are going to get away with their affairs? Do they just not care if they get caught? Is the attraction really that strong that they are willing to risk their lives, embarass their families, and subject everyone involved to public scrutiny?
I just don't get it.
6月23日 First day of summer vacationOur first day of summer vacation went well. A nice balance of doing things with (and for) the kids and still getting some housework / chores accomplished.
The kids got to play games that I keep packed away and only take out on "special" occasions. Memory, Zingo (this was Colleen's reading practice for today), and the grande finale: Twister. Somehow I was the one on the Twister mat and Wesley was the one spinning and Colleen was upstairs playing Barbies. Lesson for the day: Twister is not an Old Person's game. Although I am tempted to bring it to the next Rah Rahs get together... something tells me Deb would win, but Mo would give her a run for her money. LOL
We also made another batch of recycled crayons. I have silcon baking pans for just such a purpose. You take the wrappers off the old, broken crayons, you put them in the silicon baking pans (ours are heart and flower shapes) and you bake them in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes until they are melted. Be sure to take them out just as soon as they are not lumpy because otherwise the colors will muddle up and you'll end up with a batch of poo colored crayons that no one wants to touch, much less color with. I keep Crayola crayons in separate batches from the cheapies. Cheapies melt faster. Also, don't put fatter crayons with the more thin standard sized ones, fat ones take longer to melt. I've only used the silicone baking pans, I have no idea how you'd get them out if you used a metal or glass pan.
I posed on Freecycle today asking for old crayons and I have gotten quite the response! I got a big bucket just this evening and two more folks have offered and we are working out pick up times. A teacher said she will keep me in mind for the next school year as well. I have no idea what I am going to do with that many crayons, but in truth, it takes a lot of crayons to fill out the molds, so it's not like they won't go to use. Right now we are making them as party favors for Colleen's birthday, after that, who knows?
As I was peeling the paper off of some crayons this evening (the only annoying part in the project, nothing like getting crayon wax and paper jammed up under your thumb nail!), I distracted myself by thinking of other uses for them. You could make them in the heart mold with your wedding colors and give them as favors - "Color our day with love", etc etc. The tables could be covered with white paper so that guests could color with them right then. Teachers could give them to students, kids could make them (with adult supervision) to sell at the school fundraiser, etc etc etc. No two are alike and as long as you get them out of the oven before the colors all mix together, they are quite beautiful. We've made monochromatic ones, camoflauge, tie dyed, ones that look like flowers with a yellow center, stripes, and I'm going to try to make rainbow ones tomorrow.
The kids watched Barbie and the Diamond Castle this afternoon while I cleaned the bathrooms. I am beginning to wonder if Wesley will ever learn to watch where he is peeing and to keep it going in the toilet the entire time. *eww*
What else? Oh, we cleaned the fish tanks. They are both happily swimming in their fresh water. I'm always worried that changing the water will kill them, I try to be as careful as possible.
Oh! Colleen and I played Barbies some while Wes was napping and she asked me to make her Barbie bed a knitted blanket. I'm working on it, but the yarn she picked is awfully thin for it. She insists that it is fine. As long as Barbie is warm... LOL
I also cleane the kids bath toys with bleach today. They were getting kind of yucky and I realized I haven't cleaned them since before we moved here... and we are approaching our 1 year anniversary of living here! *ewww, again*
OK well I'm tired (and I have no idea why, it's only 11:30pm!) but I'm going to sign off and read for a bit before I go to bed. My bedtime is midnight since we get up at 8am. I let the kids stay up till 10 tonight, but I don't want to let that become a habit. I want to try to keep them on the routine we had during school so that it is nto a struggle come September.
OOH, forgot something else: we walked over to the school today, they are tearing down the old buildings and finishing up the new building. Today the overflow colonies were torn down. That is where the music room was, and the kids are sad that it is gone. Colleen got over it when I explained that their will be a new music room in the new building, but Wesley was too upset to care - he's mad that he didn't get to go to music in the old room. Geesh.
Love, Jen 6月22日 Stocking upFirst of all, Happy Father's Day to my Dad and Shawn, and all the other dads out there. :)
Secondly, today I made a hat with the sole intention of listing it for sale in my Etsy shop come this fall. It is a snowflake princess at and it is adorable! It turned out so cute, I can hardly stand it. I'll take pictures tomorrow when the light is better. I made it with 3 strands of yarn as one: two strands of Bernat Handicrafter "Holidays Sparkle", which is white; 98% cotton and 2% silver metallic thread and then 1 strand of Loops & Threads "Impeccable" worsted in white; 100% acrylic. It is newborn sized, knit stitch throughout, with a rolled brim and the cutest little metallic pom pom on top with a tiny little bow made out of the yarn. For my mom, who is interested in such things (as well as any other Knifty Knitters out there), I used the red loom and the hat is 20 rows of "e-wrap".
Today was a good day. Very low key and laid back in the morning, Shawn and Colleen went out to get donuts for breakfast. We had this yummy Steamfresh Chicken Marinara for lunch. Colleen had a birthday party to go to at 4 and the family was fine with Wes coming too. Shawn was going to come but he has a sinus headache and we didn't think the cure was going to come in the form of a dozen kids running around and screaming. :) It was at one of those inflatable jumping structure places and it was a lot of fun. I am considering having Colleen's party there. I'm also considering having the party here at the house (I must be nuts), but I've been needing a reason to get this house in shape and nothing motivates me quite like having everyone over for a party! We shall see.
OK it is awfully close to 1am and I promised myself I wouldn't get back in the habit of staying up late now that it is summer. I've committed myself to doing "summer school" with Colleen and Wesley (reading mostly, with a little math to keep her from getting rusty). I want to start our little program tomorrow and it won't do if "Teacher" is the one who is tired and cranky. We have a pretty cool motivation system, I think. The kids are tortured by the icecream truck that rolls through our neighborhood. The deal is if they put forth good effort on their lessons, they;ll earn some change so that by Friday they'll have enough to patronize the icecream truck. Now I've got to figure out how much popcicles are going for so that I am sure I give enough change each day, but that's a small detail. I'm hoping the lure of the ice cream truck is enough to keep them excited, and they'll hold me accountable. Brilliant plan, huh? :P
Love, Jen 6月19日 Colleen's Kindergarten GraduationToday was Colleen's graduation ceremony, celebrating her moving up from Kindergarten to First Grade. It was from 2:45pm to 3:30pm. Shawn took the day off of work and came with us.
The kids filed in to Pomp and Circumstance and Colleen was all yelling out "Mom! We know this song! Mom! This song, we know it!" as they were walking in. She loves to put Fantasia 2000 in the DVD player and dance to the music. On the movie, Pomp and Circumstance is the story of Noah and the Ark.
Then they sang two songs. Well, as most of her classmates mumbled and sort of shuffled around, Colleen BELTED OUT two songs, complete with elaborate hand movements and all the dance moves that Mr K was leading them through. I overheard a parent say something like "Well, we know who the showboater in this class is" and I am pretty sure they meant my Coco, and I took it the "wrong" way. I did my best not to glare at the back of their head, told myself with varying degrees of sucess that life is too short to hold grudges and they may not have been talking about my precious super star anyways. Right? Right?
Then it was time to hand out diplomas and since the class room was so full, Mr, K walked down the line instead of having students walk to him. Coco took her diploma and quickly turned back around, I had to call her back to get a decent photo of her! The lighting in the room wasn't great for photo taking either, Mr. K had most of the lights off because of how hot it was in the room, so most of my pictures are too dark or blurry. Oh well. I got great ones of the field trip the other day, so it all works out in the end. Shawn and Wesley left right after the certificates were handed out, Wes couldn't be patient any more, so they went to the school play ground and hung out there until Colleen and I came out.
After that, it was time for refreshements. We brought juice pouches. I brought 40 so that siblings could have one (there are 22 students in the class). Other parents brought drinks as well, 2 kinds of bottled water, other juice boxes. We weren't going to be running out of things to drink, thats for sure! On the other hand, the cookies were gone in seconds. There were also gold fish and tortilla chips. Mr K also handed out fresh diaries for the summer (they've been keeping them all year, it is so cute to look at Colleen's!) and each student got a book to take home. I have lost count of how many books Colleen has been given this year. Counting the ones that were sent home in her "keep reading this summer" packet, I'd have to say it is over a dozen. I'm impressed.
I ought to write this observation down and slip it into her "school memories" book, just to see if it comes true. I have a suspicion of who the "popular girls" will end up being. I think I also have "class clown", "the nerds" and "the jocks" lined up. I had figured Colleen to be a nerd, but I think she is going to end up being a drama or band geek instead. Not so say she won't cross over and be a drama/band geek/nerd, time will tell.
Thinking along these lines has me remembering a conversation I had with my WA / Blogging Buddy friends (well, really, they're all just really good friends now, no distinction needed, but since I'm categorizing everyone right now... LOL)... anyways, the conversation was about a couple kids that had grown up with theirs and had gotten themselves in some kind of trouble or another: drugs, pregnancy, and how when they were all back in kindergarten they were all so young and innocent and it was impossible to imagine anything bad happening to any of them. I REALLY HOPE that this group of kids does well for themselves. I hope that none of them have tragedies happen or make life altering mistakes. As her mother, I hope this especially fervently for my angel princess, Colleen.
Below are some photos from today. The little boy next to Colleen is Kyle. He was the boy she danced with at the school dance-a-thon fundraiser. The only boy and girl to touch at all during the event, and they danced like Fred and Ginger. Seriously, you'd think these two had taken classes together. Adorable!
Love, Jen

Coco, Wesley, and Daddy 6月17日 Long Day!Going to bed in a minute, so bullet list will have to do...
Today I:
Got Colleen ready and took her to school
Got Wesley ready
Repacked my mom's boxes to mail to her into one big box
Drove Shawn to work
Came back home and got the big box to mail to mom and my grocery bags
Went to Home Depot, bought samples to help me decide what colors to paint the exterior of our house
Also got a hose and sprinkler, our grass in front is dying from lack of water! Also got Rose disease stuff, ours have black spot. Went to Staples to UPS mom her box
Went to McDonalds because I was out of time and needed to feed Wes
Went to Colleen's school for the End of Year Picnic Field Trip
Helped herd 22 students from the school to our neighborhood park. Involved 3 street crossings. Felt like a mother duck with A LOT of ducklings.
Had a blast at the park. Took lots of pictures.
Came home, uploaded pictures to Kodak Gallery.
Got kids ready for 2nd round of errands
Went to auto supply store and bought air filters for car. Total - $33 with tax. Jiffy Lube wanted to charge me $50 each (I needed two). It pays to be cheap, folks
Went to grocery store, signed kids into play area. Play area hours have changed, now close 1 hour earlier. Shopped fast. Was still 10 minutes late. Good thing they know me and like my kids. :D
Got the 40 juice boxes for the kindergarten graduation on Thursday. I was bound and determined to participate somehow. and now I'm the Juice Box Lady! LOL
Came home and unloaded groceries
Tried to track down Shawn to coordinate pick up time. Couldn't get a hold of him.
Went out and sprayed the Rose disease stuff on the rose bushes. Fingers crossed that the black spot goes away now.
Called Kelly and arranged to bring her some Pixie Dust sachels I made. She liked them. YAY! :)
Stopped at McDonalds (again!) and kids ate in the car on the way to Kelly's.
Visited with Kelly and her family a little while until Shawn answered Kelly's email asking where he was. I get a kick out of this.
Rounded up kids and went to go get Shawn, he was coming out of the building when I pulled up, I love when that happens - no one having to wait for the other. :D
Decided to eat out because I was too beat to cook and Shawn was too hungry to wait
Went to the Outback. Nice treat. Not too expensive because the kids and I just ate snacks since we had McDonald's earlier.
Outback gave us a free sample of their new Sweet Potato fries. I loved them. The rest of the family didn't. More for me.
If you like Sweet Potato fries better go soon... our waiter thinks it is limited time only.
Came home, got the kids into bed.
Emailed the parents of the other kids in Cooc's class with the link to the album of photos from the field trip today. I got some really nice photos of the kids that would let me. Some wouldn't sit still long enough, one in particular REALLY didn't want to have her picture taken.
Decided to write this blog while waiting for Shawn to be ready for bed.
YAWN... it's bedtime!
Shawn is catching a ride with a coworker tomorrow, so I'll have the car again. Good thing, I still have more errands to run!
To Do List for tomorrow:
Home depot for that itchen sink that was on clearance and possibly a faucet to go with it.
Present for birthday party that Colleen is invited to this weekend.
Wash car, especially clean bugs off front bumper and windshield
Vacuum out inside of car
Replace air filters in car
Mow grass
Trim front bushes if I have it in me
Tidy up living room and kitchen
At least do load of colors laundry, whites if I have time
Get all of our outfits together for the graduation on Thursday
I'm forgetting something but Lord knows what it is. Maybe I'll remember it later. Hopefully.
Good night, all!
Love, Jen
Update: I remember what it is that I forgot. Must get tickets to the dance school recital on Saturday. Barb: I'm going to the afternoon performance, it is the one COlleen's teacher is going to.
Also, must go get Colleen's ballet shoes, tap shoes, and tights, her dance lessons start soon, the Saturday after this one, I think. Have to double check that.
Also, must sign kids up for swim lessons at the pool. They'll cancel the class if they don't have at least 4 students, so I had better get a move on.
IF IF IF I have time I should try and get to my doctor's office for a B12 shot. I missed it last month. Oops. Time's been positively evaporating lately. Slow down, clock!
OK that really is all for now. Love, Jen 6月11日 What my birth name says about me is SCARY accurateThere are 18 letters in your name.

One night, she confided in him that she was pregnant. Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he paid her a large sum of money if she would go to Italy to secretly have the child. Also if she stayed in Italy to raise the child, he would also provide child support until the child turned 18. She agreed, but asked how he would know when the baby was born. To keep it discrete, he told her to simply mail him a post card, and write 'Spaghetti' on the back. He would then arrange for the Child Support Payments to begin. One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife. 'Honey, 'she said, 'You received a very strange post card today.' 'Oh, just give it to me and I'll explain it later,' he said. The wife obeyed and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and fainted. On the card was written: Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti. Three with meatballs, two without.
